Good step-up camera between ultra-compact and DSLR : Canon PowerShot SX150 IS 14.1 MP Digital Camera with 12x Wide-Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom with 3.0-Inch LCD (Black)

There is one review here entitled "Do Not Buy, Battery Eater" The guy is absolutely correct. The camera falls way short of Canon published CIPA Protocol specifications for battery longevity. Battery life is terrible even using high reserve capacity NiMH 2600 mAh rechargeable batteries. Trust me, over time you'll end up spending more money for batteries than you paid for the camera. It is designed to run short term on Alkaline, extended on NiMH batteries. You shouldn't need to pay for Lithium or any other type for it perform to specification. If you power the camera on and off frequently to take pictures that is not the way to discern battery consumption. Power the camera on continuously for an extended duration and use all of the features the camera has to offer including "Videography." The batteries will discharge soon thereafter.

I spoke with Canon representatives who acknowledged that they've had many complaints concerning battery consumption. If you read reviews at photographic sites this topic is a concern. The camera is an engineering defect that cannot be resolved with Electromotive Force, the problem is resistive likely due to logic circuitry. I have no doubt this model will be discontinued. I returned the camera

I then purchased a Nikon Coolpix L120. It uses (4) AA Batteries. I experimented, meter tested with resistance (4) AA Alkaline batteries that I used in the Canon. They were very reduced but still had some life. I installed them in the Nikon to see what would happen. Using functions such as panning through program options, Zoom, and Videography etc...the Nikon functioned nearly one hour continuously. I hope my review is helpful

Found a keeper : Canon PowerShot ELPH 100 HS 12.1 MP CMOS Digital Camera with 4X Optical Zoom (Pink)

I normally use a Nikon D50 which takes great photos, Im no professional but really enjoy taking pictures of my toddler. Well he broke my Nikon and I sent to see if it could be fixed but wanted to point and shoot because they come in really handy! I reviewed what felt like a million cameras, I touched them and felt them and shot pictures with them and hated every single one! I hadnt seen this one online (cause there werent any reviews) but I went to Shutterbug and they had it, I tried it out and loved it! I've had it for a few weeks and I use it everyday! Pictures always turn out amazing! Our house kinda has crappy lighting and its a major problem with pictures, this camera takes the best pictures by far! (not super grainy looking like others) I also wanted to camera that shoots video. I dont use it to shoot professional quality video but Im impressed! Alot better then my last point and shoot. Also my video does autofocus on video mode, so the other viewer might have had a faulty one cause mine does great. I wasnt looking to spend $200 but I'd do it again in a heart beat!

Pros:
powers on so quick
Picture quality
Picture speed (amazing)
low light pictures
video!

Cons:
....nada

Customer Review :

Best Camera Of Its Type - Like The Wide Angle : Canon Powershot A1200 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom (Black)

I bought this camera while on vacation in Florida when my old Hp 5Mp camera suddenly died. That old camera took Lovely, high quality photos. It had a viewfinder, and since I was taking many pictures on the beach in full sun I wanted a change with a viewfinder (because who can see the Lcd display in intriguing light?). This was the only camera in the store that had one, so I bought it.

The education hand-operated came on a Cd and since I didn't have a computer handy, I just put the setting on "Automatic" and clicked away. After I got home and downloaded the pictures I was thoroughly disappointed. They were all a tiny bit blurry, the colors were drab and I was very upset. They looked nothing like the gorgeous pictures I had always gotten from my cheap Hp camera - they looked like something taken with an old Kodak Instamatic!

I read some of the reviews online and after reading straight through the education hand-operated decided to play with the settings to see if I could improve the image quality. Apparently having too many megapixels somehow makes it harder to get crystal clear focus. Since I am not enlarging these photos to poster size, I reset the megapixels to just 6. When face in general daylight, I set the Iso to 80 or 100, depending on brightness. Only then did I start getting some much better seeing photos - nearly the same quality as my old camera.

So instead of writing a scathing review, I will say that I am happy with this camera now. I Love that it has a viewfinder. This alone allows you to positively save on battery drain, since you can take all your pictures with the Lcd turned off and it is the Lcd that burns straight through the batteries. I am happy that it uses plain old Aa batteries - no more having to pack a charger and remember to plug my camera in every night while on a trip. I have had the camera for 2 months, taken loads of pictures trying to outline it out and I am still using the first pair of batteries I put in.

I have had many years experience using a film camera, both Slr and an developed optical viewfinder (even go back so far as to using a hand held light meter!), so I am well-known with changing settings and working with dissimilar Iso films. For those who want the ease of totally self-operating point and shoot use, I positively didn't get good quality photos in that mode. But it is relatively easy to turn the Mp's and the Iso setting to improve your pictures and once you reset those, it is pretty automatic.

This camera has some fun settings that are a bonus-such as the fish eye setting, vivid colors, B&W, etc. Overall, I have gotten happier with this camera. My old Hp was a gem, but this one comes close.

Customer Review :

Nice camera but somewhat flawed : Canon PowerShot SX230HS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with HS SYSTEM and DIGIC 4 Image Processor (Black)

I have canon sx210-Is for approximately a year now, but when my baby spilled water over it, it stopped working and the cost of heal estimated by Canon heal service was costing me approximately equal to a new sx210-Is price, that was when I decided to buy this upgraded version from Canon.

Most of features of this camera were also the part of its predecessor, but let's focus on the new features which make this one better than its' predecessor:-

*Low light support: This is the most talked about feature, and this was be one of 'The reasons' I chose this camera and it in effect worth a pat on back for this . The results are in effect phenomenal for a point and shoot kind camera.

*Super slow request for retrial video: The results are in effect awesome. It is phenomenal to see my baby; flipping her hair and running, trying to catch a butterfly - in super slow motion! I should say that the slow request for retrial option with 240 fps is for brightly lit places; otherwise the results are not that good.

*Full Hd video: This surely is an revision over sx210 is, which can only shoot 720p videos. This makes the video potential of sx 230-Hs exceptional.

*Gps tracker: It is a nice to have feature. I used it once but, this sucks the battery so I keep this option off, all the time.

Other features worth mentioning:-
*14x zoom: It is in effect phenomenal how they are able to put 14x zoom in such small body. It is worth mentioning the fact that these super zooms are only effective if they come with automated image stabilization highlight and let me ensure you that this camera as its' predecessor - sx210, does this job exceedingly well.

*12 mega pixels: Although Sx 210 has 14 mega pixels but I would not consider this as a degrade. Too many pixels packed in a small camera, do not do any good to image potential (though my wife still considers this as a degrade, can't help)

*The low wait time: between two shots is surely an revision over sx210.

*Battery life: The charge drains out fast, so would advise you to have a standby battery with you if you are planning to go out with this camera. This was the main conjecture I did not give it 5 star rating.

Conclusion: I would advise this camera to all of you who are not satisfied with the image potential of your camera and are finding for a camera which gives nice indoor image quality, specially under low lights. I am using this camera for approximately a month now and I am loving it and also bought a hard case for it this time :) remember...

Customer Review :

It is classy and it takes great pictures : Canon PowerShot SD1300IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.7-Inch LCD (Blue)

I purchased this camera as a change to my Canon PowerShot Sd600. The main calculate I chose to replace it was for the Is feature. When I purchased to Sd600 it was on sale and the Is features on cameras were an costly choice on upgraded models. I have to say the highlight performs as expected. Obviously it's not going to do much if there is a lot of camera shake, but it does the job for what it's intended to do. Photo potential is excellent. Low light does well despite the reviews I've heard. Manual settings do just as well as auto settings. I like the playback button that lets you characterize pics rather than having to switch the camera into someone else mode. When taking multiple shots the lag time in the middle of pics is minimal. Videos work well with it but there is that pesky no in and out zoom during a video. Sound potential was surprisingly good with video mode as well. It takes outdoor video well with petite wind noise. I was a bit cautious about buying a camera with no viewfinder as my last camera had one, but let's face it, I hardly used it when I had it. Insisting on a camera with a viewfinder also significantly petite my choices for point and shoots. I'm satisfied with no viewfinder and this camera is exactly what I expect in a good point and shoot. I carefully the Sd1200Is since it was on sale and a petite less costly but I figured for a few extra features, it's worth the extra $50. Battery life is great! Even under moderate to heavy use it lasted all night and part of the next day. I'd advise always having someone else battery pack as a backup though as you never know when you might need it. I would advise this camera to anyone seeing for a potential point and shoot. For the price I don't think you can ask for much more in a contract digital camera.
